Case Study: Nationwide Medical Laboratory Network

Customer: American Medical Diagnostics (AMEDX) Corporation
(Fairfield Technologies, prime contractor)
Amedx
Goal: Design, develop, test, and support secure, HIPAA-compliant software
Application: Provide secure, HIPAA-compliant communications to facilitate collaborative review of challenging medical cases by a distributed network of world-class physicians associated with a world-class hospital system
Challenges: HIPAA privacy regulations, multi-organization security policy and IT infrastructure coordination
FTI's Approach: Provide VPN support services to Amedx in the following areas:
  • Worked with Amedx service and VPN hosting vendors as well as Amedx customers to help facilitate proper setup and operation of VPN connectivity between Amedx customers and Amedx servers, providing technical advisory services to both vendors and customers as needed
  • Served as the single point of contact for both Amedx vendors and customers to report VPN-related issues and problems
  • Worked with Amedx engineers, managers, vendors, and customers to help develop solutions to identified problems and facilitate implementation support and ongoing communications to all parties
  • Maintained a tracking database of VPN-related problems reported and their resolution.
On completion of this task, FTI provided Java programming services to Amedx to design and program standalone proxy servers that transfer specified LIS-output case data via SSL to the main Amedx server (designed to replace Amedx VPN bridge connections).
Products Used: Java (J2EE), Linux, mySQL
Benefits: Short Term - Fast user access to medical services, secure communications; improve product and service revenue flow; Long Term - Easier for end users, providers to install; Enhance product security; Lower software maintenance cost
